If you qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid, there’s a special kind of plan just for you—and it could offer more benefits at little to no cost. These are called Dual Special Needs Plans, or D-SNPs, and they’re designed to provide extra support for people with limited income and health challenges.
At Medicare of Florida, we help Florida residents explore their eligibility for D-SNPs and connect them with plans that include expanded coverage, additional savings, and better care coordination. If you think you may qualify, keep reading—this could change your life.
🔍 What Is a D-SNP (Dual Special Needs Plan)?
A D-SNP is a type of Medicare Advantage plan specifically for people who are “dual eligible”—meaning they have both Medicare and Medicaid.
These plans combine:
✔️ Medicare Part A & Part B
✔️ Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage)
✔️ Medicaid benefits
✔️ Extra support services tailored to your medical and financial needs
💡 These plans are managed by private insurance companies approved by Medicare and offer all-in-one coverage, often with $0 premiums and copays.
✅ Who Qualifies for a D-SNP?
To be eligible, you must:
🔹 Be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B
🔹 Be eligible for full or partial Medicaid in Florida
🔹 Live in a service area where a D-SNP is available
🔹 Continue to meet income and asset limits as set by the state
💡 We can help verify your Medicaid status and determine which plans you qualify for based on your zip code.
📦 What Do D-SNPs Include?
These plans go beyond standard Medicare benefits. Depending on the plan, you may get:
🩺 Medical, hospital, and prescription coverage
🦷 Comprehensive dental care (fillings, dentures, root canals)
🧏 Hearing exams and hearing aids
👓 Vision care and glasses
🛒 Over-the-counter allowances (monthly card for items like vitamins, aspirin, and bandages)
🚗 Transportation to medical appointments
🍲 Meal delivery after hospital discharge
👥 Care coordination & social support services
💡 In many cases, you’ll pay nothing out of pocket for these extras if you’re fully dual eligible.
🔁 Can I Switch to a D-SNP at Any Time?
Yes! If you’re dual eligible, you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period and can switch to a D-SNP:
✔️ Once per calendar quarter during the first 9 months of the year (Jan–Sept)
✔️ Again during the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15 – Dec 7)
✔️ If your Medicaid status changes
💡 This means you can adjust your coverage if your health or income changes—and we’ll help every step of the way.
