Medicare Supplement Plans
There are 10 different Medicare supplement plans, each at a different cost with specific benefits for you to choose individualized coverage—this includes plans A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N.
Plans A and B
Plans A and B are the smallest plans of the 10 options. They are also the least expensive. Plan A covers:
- Part A Coinsurance & Hospital Costs
- Part B Coinsurance or Copayment
- First 3 Pints of Blood for Transfusions
- Part A Hospice Care Coinsurance or Copayment
Plan B offers the same coverage, as well as your Part A deductible. If you are looking for decent benefits at a relatively low price, either of these may be the plan for you.
Plans C, G, and F
These plans offer the most coverage. Plan C includes:
- Part A Coinsurance & Hospital Costs
- Part B Coinsurance/Copayment
- First 3 Pints of Blood for Transfusions
- Part A Hospice Care Coinsurance/Copayment
- Skilled Nursing Care Facility Coinsurance
- Part A Deductible
- Part B Deductible
- 80% of Foreign Travel Emergency Care
Plan G offers the same amount of coverage, but with a slight change. Rather than covering your Part B deductible, it covers Part B excess charges.
Plan F covers the most of the 10 plans, including coverage for both the Part B deductible and excess charges. However, it is expensive and liable to change in the coming years due to new laws being enacted.
Plans K and L
These plans cover a certain percentage of benefits. Plan K, for example, covers:
- 100% of Part A Coinsurance and Hospital Costs
- 50% of Part B Coinsurance/Copayment
- 50% of the First 3 Pints of Blood for Transfusions
- 50% of Part A Hospice Care Coinsurance or Copayment
- 50% of Skilled Nursing Care Facility Coinsurance
- 50% of the Part A Deductible
Plan K will cover the first 50% of these expenses, while you pay the remaining costs out-of-pocket. This helps to reduce your overall monthly premiums.
If you want more than 50% coverage but still want a smaller monthly premium, Plan L covers the exact same benefits (including 100% of Part A coinsurance and hospital costs) but at 75% rather than 50%.
Plans D, M, and N
These plans are good “middle-of-the-road” options. If you’re looking for more coverage than plans A and B, but still less than C, G, and F, any of these may be a good option. Plan D covers:
- Part A Coinsurance & Hospital Costs
- Part B Coinsurance/Copayment
- First 3 Pints of Blood for Transfusions
- Part A Hospice Care Coinsurance/Copayment
- Skilled Nursing Care Facility Coinsurance
- Part A Deductible
- 80% of Foreign Travel Emergency Care
Interestingly enough, Plans D and N are seemingly identical—but, with Plan N, you will have to pay a copayment for doctor’s visits and emergency care.
Plan M covers 50% of your Part A deductible, the rest the same as Plan D.
