The Medicare program offers a diverse range of benefits that you can use to cover your health care costs. If Original Medicare doesn’t offer all of the benefits you are interested in, you can also opt to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan. Here is what you can expect from Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage.
Original Medicare
Original Medicare consists of Part A and Part B benefits. Part A is hospital insurance, while Part B is medical insurance. With Original Medicare, most medical treatments are covered to some extent, allowing you to receive the care you need at reasonable costs. You can also supplement your Original Medicare benefits with additional coverage that can be purchased through private insurers.
Medicare Part D
Original Medicare does not include prescription drug coverage. Therefore, you will have to purchase a Part D prescription drug coverage plan to receive access to those benefits. Part D plans provide coverage for a set list of medications, called its formulary. The formulary differs between plans, but each one is required to cover at least two prescription drugs in each major category. All plans must cover the following:
- Antipsychotics
- Immunosuppressants
- HIV/AIDS medications
- Anticancer drugs
- Anticonvulsants
- Antidepressants
- Common vaccines
Medicare Supplement Insurance
Medicare Supplement Insurance is another form of insurance you can use to add to your Medicare benefits. With Medicare Supplements, you can get help paying the out-of-pocket costs that remain after Medicare pays their approved amount. There are twelve different plans available, each offering a different assortment of benefits. The types of costs covered include copayments, deductibles, and coinsurance. Medicare Advantage
Medicare Part C, or Medicare Advantage, is a section of the Medicare program that allows private insurers to provide Medicare beneficiaries with their Part A and Part B benefits. Advantage plans often offer more flexible benefits than Original Medicare, with the insurance companies having more freedom to offer supplemental benefits. For example, most Medicare Advantage plans include prescription drug coverage, while many others also include vision, hearing, and dental coverage to some extent.
