What Are Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plans & Do You Need One?

Medicare covers a lot, but it doesn’t cover everything—and that’s where Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans come in. If you have Original Medicare (Parts A & B), a Medigap plan can help pay for out-of-pocket costs like copays, coinsurance, and deductibles.

At Medicare of Florida, we help seniors find the right Medigap plan so they can reduce healthcare expenses and avoid surprise medical bills. Let’s explore how Medicare Supplement plans work and whether you need one!

📌 What is a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plan?

A Medicare Supplement plan, also called Medigap, is a private insurance plan designed to fill the gaps in Original Medicare. It helps cover expenses not paid by Medicare Parts A & B, such as:

✔️ Deductibles
✔️ Copayments
✔️ Coinsurance
✔️ Foreign travel emergency care

💡 Medigap plans ONLY work with Original Medicare. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C), you don’t need Medigap!

💰 What Does Medigap Cover?

There are 10 standardized Medigap plans (A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N), each offering different levels of coverage.

✅ Most Medigap Plans Cover:

✔️ Part A coinsurance & hospital costs (after Medicare benefits are used up)
✔️ Part B coinsurance or copayments
✔️ First 3 pints of blood (for medical procedures)
✔️ Hospice care coinsurance/copayments

💡 Some plans (like Plan G & Plan F) offer extra coverage, including Part B deductibles and foreign emergency travel coverage!

Part B Deductible ✅ Yes ❌ No ❌ No
Part B Coinsurance ✅ Yes ✅ Yes ✅ (with copay)
Foreign Travel Coverage ✅ Yes ✅ Yes ✅ Yes

💡 Plan F is no longer available to new enrollees. Plan G is now the most comprehensive option!

🤔 Do You Need a Medigap Plan?

A Medicare Supplement plan may be a good choice if you:

✔️ Want predictable medical costs and fewer surprise bills
✔️ Travel frequently and need coverage outside the U.S.
✔️ Visit doctors often and need lower out-of-pocket costs
✔️ Don’t want network restrictions—see any doctor who accepts Medicare

💡 If you prefer an all-in-one plan with extra benefits, a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan may be a better option.

🕒 When Can You Enroll in Medigap?

📅 Best Time to Enroll: During your Medigap Open Enrollment Period (OEP)
Starts: The month you turn 65 and enroll in Medicare Part B
Lasts: 6 months

💡 During this time, you can get a Medigap plan with NO health questions or medical underwriting. If you wait, you may be denied coverage or pay higher premiums.

🚨 What Medigap Does NOT Cover

Prescription drugs (you need a Part D plan for that)
Dental, vision, or hearing care
Long-term nursing home care
Cosmetic procedures

💡 Want extra benefits? A Medicare Advantage plan might be a better fit!
