Avoiding Medicare Scams: How to Protect Yourself from Fraud

With millions of seniors enrolled in Medicare, it’s no surprise that scammers target beneficiaries with phone calls, fake websites, and even door-to-door tactics. These scams can result in stolen identities, unauthorized charges, and unnecessary medical services—all in your name.

At Medicare of Florida, your safety and well-being go beyond just choosing a plan. We’re here to help you recognize and avoid Medicare fraud, and know what to do if you’re targeted.

🚨 Common Medicare Scams to Watch For

Here are some of the most widespread scams that affect Medicare beneficiaries:

📞 1. Phone Call Scams

Someone claiming to be from “Medicare” or an insurance company asks for your:

  • Medicare ID number

  • Social Security number

  • Banking details

💡 Medicare will NEVER call you to ask for personal information unless you’ve given them permission in advance.

💳 2. Fake Equipment Offers

Scammers offer “free” back braces, knee braces, or testing kits (COVID, cancer screening, etc.)—and all they need is your Medicare number.

💡 These are often fraudulent providers trying to bill Medicare for items you didn’t need—or never receive.

📬 3. Fake Emails or Letters

You may receive messages pretending to be from Medicare or a trusted insurer, asking you to verify your identity or click a suspicious link.

💡 Never click links or download files from unexpected emails. Always verify the source.

🚪 4. Door-to-Door “Medicare Representatives”

Someone shows up at your home claiming to be from Medicare or an insurance company, asking to “review your benefits.”

💡 Medicare reps are not allowed to visit your home without permission. Shut the door and report them.
