Medicare 101: Understanding the Basics & Your Coverage Options

Navigating Medicare can feel overwhelming, but understanding its basics is the first step toward making the right healthcare choices. At Medicare of Florida, we’re here to simplify the process and guide you toward the best plan for your needs. Whether you’re approaching eligibility or helping a loved one, this guide will break down the essentials of Medicare so you can make informed decisions with confidence.

What is Medicare and Who is Eligible?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for individuals aged 65 and older, as well as younger people with certain disabilities or conditions like End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or ALS. If you’ve worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years, you’re likely eligible for premium-free Part A (Hospital Insurance).

To qualify, you must be:
65 or older and a U.S. citizen or legal resident
✅ Under 65 with a qualifying disability
✅ Diagnosed with ESRD or ALS

If you’re turning 65 soon, it’s important to understand your enrollment periods so you avoid late penalties and ensure continuous healthcare coverage.

Breaking Down Medicare: Parts A, B, C & D

Medicare is divided into different parts, each covering specific healthcare services:

🔹 Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)
This covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health services. Most people receive Part A premium-free if they or their spouse worked long enough and paid Medicare taxes.

🔹 Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance)
Part B helps cover doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medical supplies. Unlike Part A, this comes with a monthly premium, which varies depending on your income.

🔹 Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage Plans)
Offered by private insurance companies, these plans bundle Parts A & B and often include extra benefits like dental, vision, hearing, and prescription drug coverage. Medicare Advantage plans provide network-based care options, including HMO and PPO plans.

🔹 Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage)
Part D helps lower the cost of prescription drugs, protecting you from high out-of-pocket expenses. This plan is optional but highly recommended if you take medications regularly.

Original Medicare vs. Medicare Advantage: Which One is Right for You?

Choosing between Original Medicare (Parts A & B) and Medicare Advantage (Part C) depends on your healthcare needs and preferences.

Choose Original Medicare if:
✔️ You want the freedom to see any doctor or specialist nationwide who accepts Medicare
✔️ You prefer a separate Part D plan for prescription drugs
✔️ You want the option to add a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan to cover out-of-pocket costs

Choose Medicare Advantage if:
✔️ You want a plan that includes extra benefits like dental, vision, and hearing coverage
✔️ You prefer an all-in-one plan with bundled prescription drug coverage
✔️ You’re comfortable with network restrictions (HMO/PPO plans) and lower out-of-pocket costs

At Medicare of Florida, we help our clients compare these options to find the best coverage for their healthcare needs and budget.

Understanding Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plans

While Original Medicare covers a significant portion of healthcare expenses, it doesn’t pay for everything. That’s where Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans come in. These policies help cover out-of-pocket costs, including copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

There are 10 standardized Medigap plans (A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N), each offering different levels of coverage. The most popular option today is Plan G, which covers almost all out-of-pocket costs except the Part B deductible.

Not sure if a Medigap plan is right for you? Our team at Medicare of Florida can guide you through the options and help you decide based on your healthcare needs and budget.

When and How to Enroll in Medicare?

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): Begins 3 months before your 65th birthday and ends 3 months after
🕒 General Enrollment Period (GEP): Runs from January 1 – March 31 each year for those who missed their IEP
🔄 Special Enrollment Period (SEP): Available for those with qualifying life events, like employer coverage ending

If you’re approaching Medicare eligibility, it’s crucial to enroll on time to avoid late penalties. We can help you understand your enrollment window and get started with the right plan.
